Week of February 18 - 22, 2019

Harlem Renaissance

To celebrate Black History month, the 3rd Grade is learning about the Harlem Renaissance.  The Harlem Renaissance refers to the cultural, artistic and social expression that defined the New York neighborhood of Harlem between World War I and the 1930s.

Each student choose an influential person from the Harlem Renaissance, including Florence Mills, Cab Calloway, Zora Hurston, and Lil Hardin Armstrong.  They are learning how to take notes and give credit when using books and the internet as resources.  Eventually, the finished products will be made into original Adobe Spark videos. Keep an eye out for an upcoming blog to see some of the videos.

Community Time

The 3rd Graders love spending time with their HCA Families.  Fun was had by all last week during Community Time.  The children rotated among several activities including making slime, creating rainbow pictures out of Skittles candies, making Valentines, and competing in relay races in the MPR.

Culture Boxes Have Arrived!
This week, the students brought in their Culture Boxes to share with their classmates.  They worked hard on creating a box that contained artifacts and items that represent their family culture.  In addition to the box project, each student wrote a short summary about their family ancestry and then presented it to the class.

Next week, each student will make a presentation to the other Lower School classrooms.  It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about each other's families.

February 11 - 15, 2019

The Lower School is collecting pull tabs to benefit Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.  The 3rd Grade was busy making posters to advertise this service project.  After working collaboratively, they distributed their posters throughout the school.  Please "pull the tabs" and send them into school.
"Save a tab, save a child!"
