December 10 - 14, 2018

We are "Smitten" with 3rd Grade!
Our winter bulletin board is all finished and includes reasons why the students love being in 3rd Grade.  Listen to some of their favorite things about this awesome grade!

St. Nicholas Visits
The Lower School met to read a book about St. Nicholas called, The Legend of St. Nicholas: A Story of Christmas Giving.

On December 6th, St. Nicholas came to visit the boys and girls at HCA.  The students put their shoes out in the hallway in anticipation of his visit.  Everyone was surprised to find their shoes filled with a candy treat and a St. Nicholas prayer card.

Math Facts Fun

I mentioned to many parents at the Parent/Teacher conferences that students need to practice their math facts each night. Here's a short article about helping your child learn his/her multiplication facts at home.

Junior Choir's Christmas Court House Field Trip

The Junior and Senior Choirs enjoyed a trolley ride to Media and brought holiday cheer to the employees and visitors of the Delaware County Courthouse this week.  Our students received many compliments on their festive singing.  Afterwards, they devoured a pizza lunch at Pinocchio's Restaurant.

OPERATION ADVENT
Throughout the Advent season,
Holy Child will be collecting materials
to support The Providence Center.

The Providence Center provides educational services
to the community in the Fairhill section of Philadelphia.

Providence Center Flyer

The median income per household in this neighborhood is less than $15,000,
which makes for the highest poverty rate in the city.
Additionally, Fairhill's murder rate is over five times the city's average,
which again makes for the highest in the city.
In the midst of the struggles that accompany such statistics,
The Providence Center offers the hard-working families of this neighborhood
education, love, and possibility.

Holy Child aims to help with that mission through Operation Advent.

Please help however you can by donating from the items on their wishlist:
dry erase markers, notebook and lined paper, pens and pencils,
colored computer paper, construction paper,
critical thinking games (chess, Stratego, Ticket to Ride, etc.),
cooperative games (story cubes, race to the Treasure, etc.).

Hail Mary, Full of Grace
We have been learning about the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary.  The children have taken time to pray the Rosary together during Religion class.

Christmas Parts of Speech

Here are a couple of our 3rd Graders with their Christmas Parts of Speech projects.  Each child choose a thing related to the holidays and wrote nouns, verbs, and adjectives related to that item.

Community Time
Students met with their "HCA Families" to work on a service project.  Families worked together to make place mats for the Meals on Wheels program.

We Are Thankful!

The class remembered the many blessings in their lives by creating a Gratitude Tree.  Each member of the class filled out a leaf to show what they are thankful for and then the leaves were glued onto the tree to decorate it.

It's Beginning to Sound A Lot Like Christmas
It's the Holy Child Academy tradition of the Lower School Christmas Show.  The Third Grade is in the midst of practicing and perfecting their lines, lyrics, and dances for this annual event.  Ms. Brown and I ask that you please go over your child's lines for the show.  Please have your child speak slowly and with expression to impress the guests at our shows.

The Christmas Gala is on Monday, December 17th at 6:30 p.m. and the Grandparents' Day Show is on Tuesday, December 18th at 9:00 a.m.  More details to follow.
