Week of May 23 - 27, 2022

 Weathering and Erosion

We have focused on the topic of Weathering and Erosion in science class.  Students have learned the difference between the two and how each one works.  They had a blast conducting their own Erosion Candy experiments.  After making hypotheses about which "rock" would erode the quickest, students experimented with M&M candies, Gummy Bears, and Lifesaver candies.  

Library Time

Each week this school year, the class has had the opportunity to visit the school library to check out books of their choice.  The students enjoyed their last visit this week.  

The last day of school is on Wednesday, June 8 (1/2 Day of School & No HCA+).

Week of May 16 - 20, 2022

 

Today we remembered a wonderful man and a beloved member of our school community.  We gathered together to celebrate the life of Bernie Capuano.  Mr. Capuano served as HCA's dedicated maintenance man and plant manager for over twenty years.  He will always be remembered by the dedication of the school's new flagpole and plaque.

The Planeteers

The Planeteers were hard at work saving the environment by going on a litter walk to clean up aroud the HCA campus. 

Soft Rain Novel Unit

Third Grade is enjoying their novel unit, Soft Rain: A Story of the Cherokee Trail of Tears.  Students are learning how to take notes about story elements, figurative language, and character traits while learning about this sad time in U.S. history.

Week of May 2 - 5, 2022

 Waste-Free Lunch

The Third Grade Planeteers sponsored a Waste-Free lunch last week.  Students were encouraged to pack lunches that did not have trash waste.  

STEAM Lab Fun!

Everyday is Earth Day when you are a Grade 3 Planeteer.  This week in STEAM 3rd grade students were challenged to reuse materials from the maker cart to create something useful. This lesson not only worked on their problem solving and critical thinking skills but was also an opportunity for them to practice their communication and documentation skills in a STEAM journal. These skills are important as they start to do more independent lessons in 4th grade.
